Bobby Lashley, born Franklin Roberto Lashley on July 16, 1976, in Junction City, Kansas, grew up in a military family. His father was a drill sergeant in the U.S. Army, and because of his father’s job, Lashley’s family frequently moved between military bases. He was raised primarily by his mother in a single-parent household. Lashley has three older sisters, one of whom also served in the U.S. military.

Lashley started his journey in amateur wrestling during middle school at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he initially joined the sportin seventh grade as an alternative to football. He continued his wrestling career in high school and later attended Missouri Valley College. During his time there, he excelled in amateur wrestling, winning the NAIA National Wrestling Championship three years in a row (1996-1998). He graduated from Missouri Valley College in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in Human Service Agency Management and Recreation Administration.

After college, Lashley joined the U.S. Army, continuing his wrestling pursuits through the Army’s World Class Athlete Program. He competed internationally, earning medals in wrestling events before a knee injury ended his amateur career in 2003​.
